On a phone this calculator is built for viewing: load a linkage, run it, read off the values. For building and for dragging the joints a larger screen is markedly better.

Draw a curve with the Target path tool, then the deviation is measured.
Draw a forbidden region with the Blocked area tool, then it is checked.
For self-locking, switch friction on at a joint and enter µ₀.
A load arises from mass on a link, a spring, or a load from the toolbox.
Roberts cognates: two more four-bars trace the same coupler curve.

Formulas and fundamentals
What is computed
Every link carries three coordinates q = (x, y, φ), and every joint is an equation between them. The calculator solves all equations anew for every drive position and therefore computes any planar chain, not only the four-bar.
Cam joint, gear pair, rack and Geneva drive each take one degree of freedom from the chain; the gear pair follows VDI 2142 Part 2, eq. (121), with signed pitch radii.
A rotary drive prescribes the absolute angle φ of its link, a linear drive the piston travel of a cylinder or the travel of a sliding joint.
Degree of freedom according to Grübler
A chain is constrained when F equals the number of drives; only then does the system have as many equations as unknowns. All grounded links count as one link n, and a joint between two of them does not count as a joint.
Newton's method and quality index
Each position is solved until the largest residual is below 10⁻¹⁰. The quality index, the geometric mean of the singular values of the non-dimensionalised Jacobian, tends to zero in a dead centre.
Transmission angle and pressure angle
μ_min over the cycle is rated against the empirical value of 40° to 50° for slow-running linkages (Kerle/Pittschellis/Corves, Einführung in die Getriebelehre, 3rd ed. 2007, eq. 6.4). At a cam joint the same limit applies as the pressure angle.
Cam disc
As in the cam calculator, curvature against the roller, cutter radius, pressure angle and the contact force at which the roller lifts off are checked.
Form closed as a groove cam or with a conjugate cam and second roller, the roller does not lift off. The conjugate cam is the path of the second roller in the frame of the disc over one turn and is checked against its roller like the first.
Grashof class
If the condition holds, one link rotates fully: with the shortest link at the frame it is a crank-rocker, as the frame a double crank, as the coupler a double rocker. With equality the linkage is change-point, otherwise a triple rocker.
Swing angle and time ratio
Both follow from the limit positions of the output link and refer to time. If the output slides in a guide, the stroke takes the place of the swing angle.
Drive torque and drive power
From mass, centre of mass and inertia of the links, gravity, the force elements and the external loads, kinetostatics yields the torque at every drive and the force in every joint. The motion remains that of the drive. At gear pairs and racks the bearings carry the tooth force, the tangential force F_t and radially F_t·tan α with the pressure angle α (20° without an entry), at a Geneva drive the pin force during engagement.
Servo sizing and flywheel
With exactly one rotary drive, reduced inertia and torque shares follow from the influence coefficients dq/dφ. At the motor, gear ratio i, efficiency η and motor inertia J_M count; the flywheel according to VDI 2149 part 1 follows from the largest energy fluctuation.
Natural frequency and shaking force
The drive train springs with the torsional stiffness c, the mechanism oscillates with J_red; below ten times the cycle frequency the rigid model no longer holds according to VDI 2149 part 1.
Cycle rate and synchronism
On the same path every acceleration grows with the square of the cycle rate. In synchronism according to VDI 2740 part 3 the link point runs along the belt at the belt speed v_B within the tolerance t.
Point guidance with two cams (VDI 2741)
Between the support points the target path runs in straight lines with the 4-5-6-7 polynomial. Two circle intersections K give the levers of the five-bar for every instant; the roller centre R, seen in the frame of the cam rotating with θ = −2π·τ, is its pitch curve r(u). It is fixed at 360 points, with the Fourier series through these points in between. With “Disc follows the path” it is recomputed after every change: the cams leave the system of equations, the point is at its target position at time τ, and the solver gives the positions from which r(u) follows.
Springs, dampers and external loads
Positive S pulls the two anchors together; the linear element measures F₀ in N, k in N/mm and c in N·s/mm. The rest value g₀ is taken from the drawn distance when the element is placed.
Joint friction
The friction circle follows Kerle, Einführung in die Getriebelehre, 3rd ed. 2007, eq. 5.6 and 5.7; the two edge forces at a sliding joint are drawn in Hagedorn/Thonfeld/Rankers, Konstruktive Getriebelehre, Table 6.1. By default no joint carries a coefficient of friction µ.
Self-locking according to VDI 2158
κ is the share of static friction with µ₀ that just holds the linkage at rest under the external load.
Instantaneous centre and evolute
The paths of the centre in the frame and in the link are the fixed and moving centrode. The evolute is the locus of the centres of curvature of a coupler curve.
Motion laws according to VDI 2143
In addition there are the modified sine and the modified trapezoidal acceleration; the laws are distinguished by their characteristic values C_v, C_a and C_j.
Geneva drive
u is the crank angle. When the pin enters, the angular acceleration jumps, so the mechanism has jerk (Scheitenberger, Getriebetechnik lecture, FH Regensburg 2008, Fig. 11.2).
Deviation from the target path
The first assignment compares the shape, the second demands equal distance in equal time. The deviation is also measured between the vertices of the target path and with at least 1800 steps per cycle.
Designing a linkage
The methods in the Design sheet are solved in closed form, and every design comes with a check from the finished dimensions. Slider-crank to VDI 2130, centric crank-rocker, four-bar via the relative pole, function synthesis after Freudenstein and relative position synthesis to VDI 2121, which brings the positions Bᵢ of the output joint back into the system of the input link:
Sources: Kerle/Pittschellis/Corves, problems 6.1 and 6.2; FH Jena, exercises 14 and 18; Freudenstein (1955); Hartenberg/Denavit (1964); Regensburg University of Applied Sciences, kinematics notes, ch. 6.1; VDI 2121.
Before building, the sheet computes the designed linkage over its whole run, as the results card does afterwards, and states the smallest transmission angle μ, for cams the largest pressure angle α, counted as μ = 90° − α. From the guide value of 40° the linkage counts as good, from 20° as marginal, below that as stiff; the same grades rank the proposals of position and path synthesis.
Searching a linkage for a target path
Path search looks for a four-bar for a drawn target path, using differential evolution after Storn/Price and the simplex method after Nelder/Mead over eight multistarts, with start values from a coupler-curve atlas. It finds a good linkage, not provably the best.
On the drawn linkage it moves the joint and roller positions instead, plus lift and base circle of every disc with a motion plan, whatever the linkage type, the same way a drag by hand does. It starts at the drawn linkage and at the design it came from, then searches coarsely with differential evolution in a box sized to the linkage and finely with the simplex method after Nelder/Mead from the best finds. Locks stay fixed. If discs follow the path, it recomputes them for every candidate and searches for the largest reserve over pressure angle, curvature and transmission angle.
A new slider-crank is searched over nine quantities with the closed-form solution of the slider-crank, again with differential evolution and Nelder/Mead over six multistarts. The coupler is always longer than crank and offset together, so the crank rotates fully.
What the calculator does not compute
Links are rigid and joints free of play, the computation is kinetostatic and not dynamic, and collisions are only checked against drawn blocked areas. Strength, service life and natural frequency are not verified; for a shaft under the drive torque the verification to DIN 743 applies.
Worked example
The calculation uses the four-bar template the page opens with: frame d = 100 mm, crank a = 30 mm, coupler b = 90 mm, rocker c = 75 mm, A₀ = (0 | 0) and B₀ = (100 | 0). Count F = 3·(4 − 1) − 2·4 = 1 with one drive, so constrained.
Grashof: s + l = 30 + 100 = 130 mm against p + q = 90 + 75 = 165 mm, and the shortest link sits at the frame. It is a crank-rocker: the crank rotates fully, the rocker reverses twice per cycle.
At a crank angle of 90°, A = (0 | 30). Intersecting the circles about A (90 mm) and about B₀ (75 mm) gives B = (79.5199 | 72.1496); the check yields |AB| = 90.000000 mm and |BB₀| = 75.000000 mm.
Over 361 positions the calculator reports μ_min = 49.2° at a drive angle of 0°, two limit positions, a swing angle ψ₀ = 48.6° (closed form 48.6052°), the time ratio k = 1.115 and the smallest quality index 0.672.
With 10 kg on the crank, its centre of mass at (15 | 0) and gravity switched on, the largest drive torque is 98.1 N · 15 mm = 1,471.5 N·mm, where the crank is horizontal.
The preset in the Design sheet, slider-crank to VDI 2130: s₀ = 100 mm, k = 1.2 and β = 103° give φ₀ = 196.364°, the crank r = 47.101 mm, the coupler b = 126.947 mm, the offset e = −39.152 mm and a smallest transmission angle of 47.2°. The textbook example Kerle, problem 6.1 with k = 2.6 and β = 95° gives r = 46.153 mm, b = 55.003 mm and e = −8.816 mm, but only 2.0°: the price of strongly unequal stroke times.
Roller lever on a cam disc: centre distance 200 mm, lever 140 mm, base circle 130 mm. The lever swings by 16.4405°, the largest pressure angle is 29.3°, and the smallest radius of curvature of the roller centre path is 37.70 mm.
Frequently asked questions
How do I build a linkage?
The page opens with a running crank-rocker; “New” clears the canvas and the library loads ready-made linkages. In Quick build each click places a joint and connects it to the previous one, and a click on the first point closes the loop; in Single part you place links, joints, sliders, cams, gears, racks, Geneva drives, cylinders, springs and loads one at a time, and for a slider-crank you click the free end of the coupler first with “Slider” and then the crank pivot, and the guide is as long as the slider can travel: its own drive’s stroke if it has one, otherwise up to the dead centres. Dragging a joint changes the dimensions, which then appear in the properties panel; “Assemble the other branch” switches to the second assembly configuration. “Choose image” puts a sketch or scan under the drawing, and the file never leaves your computer. Any planar chain is computed as soon as it is constrained: select the link that stands still and choose “Ground (G)”, then the driven link with “Drive (A)”.
Is there free software for linkage design?
Kinematics Studio runs free of charge in the browser, with no installation and no sign-up: build linkages, run them as an animation, inspect forces and key figures and share them by link. Only the outputs are paid, that is the PDF report, DXF, value table, cam contour and video.
Can I watch and save the motion as an animation?
Yes. The linkage runs on the drawing area, optionally with coupler curve, traces and instantaneous centre; the space bar starts and stops it. You save one cycle as a WebM video, evenly timed and cut so that it loops seamlessly. The video is one of the paid outputs, like the report and the DXF.
What does constrained mean?
A linkage is constrained when its degree of freedom according to Grübler equals the number of drives; the drives then fix the motion completely. If it is larger, a constraint or a drive is missing and the linkage is open; while building, that is normal. If it is smaller, one constraint or drive too many is in the model and it is overconstrained. The chip at the top right shows the state, a click on it names the remedy, and the characteristics card names loose or redundant parts. If links hang loose, it also gives the remedy, tried out on the model: on which links another drive helps and which joints, made rigid, join two links into one.
How do I set up the drive?
“from φ” and “to φ” are absolute angles of the driven link against the horizontal; the arc at the pivot shows the range. For continuous running the linear law fits, for an indexing cycle with a stop the 3-4-5 polynomial, the inclined sine for jerk-sensitive and the modified sine for torque-limited drives (VDI 2143). Motion duration or speed sets the time axis, from which velocities, accelerations and torques follow. A cylinder or a driven sliding joint travels a distance instead of an angle; its support points can be dragged in the “Motion function” sheet.
What do the transmission angle and the Grashof class tell me?
The transmission angle μ measures how favourably the coupler acts on the output link: at 90° the whole force goes into motion, at 0° the linkage locks in a dead centre. The smallest value over the cycle is rated against the empirical value of 40° for slow-running linkages (Kerle). At a cam joint the same limit applies as the pressure angle α = 90° − μ. For a four-bar the Grashof condition, s + l < p + q, says whether a crank rotates fully and which class the linkage belongs to.
Does the tool compute forces and drive torque?
Yes, as soon as there is a load in the model: mass and inertia of a link, gravity, a spring or an external load. From that follow drive torque, drive power and the forces in all joints over the cycle. The motion stays that of the drive; springs and loads change the forces, not the kinematics. Through a profile a load acts in only part of the cycle, such as a pressing force. Elasticity and play are not modelled.
How do I size the motor, flywheel and drive train?
With exactly one rotary drive and a load in the model, the card gives the RMS torque M_rms over the motion time, the reduced inertia J_red at the drive and the shaking force on the frame. Under “Motor and drive train” at the drive you enter gear ratio i, efficiency η, motor inertia J_M, rated torque and peak torque; from these follow motor torque, RMS motor torque, motor speed and the inertia ratio J_red,max/(i²·J_M). If the motor sits on a link other than the one whose motion is prescribed, choose it under “Motor sits on”; the master/slave table for the controller is then available as CSV, per degree of the uniformly running master axis. With a coefficient of fluctuation δ the flywheel follows VDI 2149 part 1 from ΔW_max/(δ·ω²), with the torsional stiffness c the natural frequency f_e = √(c/J_red)/2π, which should be at least ten times the cycle frequency.
How do I check cycle rate and synchronism with a belt?
Select the link point that carries the product. Under “Product and belt”, a_perm limits the acceleration of the product, for instance 9.81 m/s² for an open can; the card gives the largest acceleration at the point and the permissible cycle rate n_perm = n·√(a_perm/a_max), because on the same path every acceleration grows with the square of the cycle rate. With belt speed, direction and tolerance the tool finds the longest range in which the point's speed along the belt stays within the tolerance (synchronism according to VDI 2740 part 3), and gives its share of the cycle, the travel within it and the largest transverse speed. The diagrams plot the speed along and across the belt, and dashed in the colour of the point the canvas draws its path relative to the belt, as the travelling product sees it.
How do friction and self-locking enter?
Friction is computed as soon as a joint carries a coefficient of friction µ; none does by default. At a revolute joint the friction circle r_R = r·µ/√(1+µ²) with the journal radius r applies (Kerle, eq. 5.6 and 5.7); at a sliding joint µ and the guide length count. If a joint also carries a coefficient of static friction µ₀, the calculator verifies self-locking according to VDI 2158: the linkage is self-locking when the locking factor r exceeds 1 in every position.
How do I compare a linkage with a target path?
Draw the curve a point is to follow in Target path mode. The largest deviation of the path of a link point or joint is measured, either as a pure shape comparison (nearest point) or time-correct (equal arc length). Enter an admissible deviation under “Limits”; there is no default, because it depends on the task alone. Path search looks for a four-bar or a slider-crank that follows a target path, or improves the drawn linkage, whatever its type. If it stays far off at corners, it offers point guidance with two cams, which passes exactly through the corners.
Can the calculator design a linkage for me?
Yes. The “Design” sheet computes in closed form: slider-crank to VDI 2130, crank-rocker for equal stroke times, four-bar for a transmission ratio, function synthesis after Freudenstein, relative position synthesis to VDI 2121 for two or three position assignments with crank or slider at input and output, approximate straight-line linkage, dwell mechanism and point guidance with two cams to VDI 2741: for the support points of a path and their cam angles it designs a five-bar with two roller levers and computes both cam profiles backwards; pivot spacing, pivot depth, lever and coupler can be given, and left empty the design searches for them. For two to five prescribed positions of a plane, position synthesis after Burmester supplies the joints, and for prescribed path points, path synthesis does; both start in the same sheet at the tiles “Linkage from positions” and “Linkage from path points”, drawn even without a linkage (a position with two clicks for place and direction, a path point with one) or set with a link, for example a triangle whose copy you drag into every further position, and “Compute linkage” in the panel on the right opens the synthesis with the best proposals; under “Choose by hand” the joints can also be clicked on the link, as in the three-position construction, and after building, a click on a position shows how exactly the linkage reaches it and goes to it. Path search, by contrast, tries: it finds a good four-bar for a drawn target path, not provably the best, and its run is repeatable through the random seed. Every result then stands on the canvas as an ordinary linkage, with its derivation in the report.
What are Roberts cognates, and where do I find them?
For every four-bar with a point on its coupler there are two further four-bars that trace the same coupler curve, with other link lengths and a third frame point C₀. They help when your own linkage does not fit the installation space or hits a blocked area. In the “Design” sheet the tile “Roberts cognates” computes them from the linkage on the drawing area or from entered dimensions; if the coupler carries a link point, the evaluation and the properties panel lead there too. The preview shows all three linkages in their own colour on the same curve, highlights the selected one and runs them together. The selected one is adopted; once you have viewed them, they also appear in the report.
What does the collision check test?
In Blocked area mode you draw a region no link may pass through. Every moving link is checked over the whole cycle; the first contact and the deepest penetration are reported. A link has no width here, its centre line is checked: widen the area by half the link width. Links are not checked against each other.
What do the instantaneous centre, centrodes, trace and evolute show?
The instantaneous centre is the point about which a link is turning at this moment; when the link translates it lies at infinity and is drawn as a direction stroke. Fixed and moving centrode are its trace in the frame and in the link, one rolling on the other. A trace draws the path of a joint, the evolute the centres of curvature of a coupler curve; its smallest radius of curvature limits, for example, a roller that is to follow the path. The position series overlays several positions of the cycle.
What are the vector arrows and their scale for?
At a joint or link point they show velocity v, acceleration a and joint force F in the position shown. Their length follows from the scale below the drawing, such as “m_v = 12.5 (mm/s) per mm”; in round brackets it is derived from the cycle, without brackets you set it yourself. The acceleration arrow has a double shaft, and the force arrow has its tip on the point, because a force acts on it.
How do I measure and lock dimensions?
In Measure mode two clicks on joints or link points give a distance, three an angle; the second click is the vertex. Angles are measured counter-clockwise, and the other click order gives the angle on the other side. The value follows the position, and the report adds the smallest and the largest over the cycle. The lock next to a length or angle in the properties panel keeps that dimension fixed while dragging.
How do I build a cam mechanism?
With the part “Cam”: a click on empty space creates disc, roller lever and drive, and the “Motion plan” sheet opens. The segments must cover 0° to 360° without gaps, and rises and returns must balance. As in the cam calculator, pressure angle, curvature against the roller, cutter radius and roller lift-off are checked. Under “Form closure” it becomes a groove cam or gets a conjugate cam with a second roller, and with “Disc follows the path” its profile is recomputed from the target path with timing after every change. The contour goes to CAD as a SolidWorks curve, Excel or CSV; with two cams, “Profile of” chooses which, and with form closure “Profile” chooses the outer flank or the conjugate cam.
How do I add gears, a rack, a Geneva drive or a cylinder?
Each has its own part in Single part mode, and a click on empty space creates a running mechanism. Two clicks on existing rotation axes set a gear pair, a click on the pinion axis and one on the carrier link a rack; radii and type then appear in the properties panel. The cylinder takes two clicks, base and head, and drives the linkage like a hydraulic cylinder. The tooth force enters the bearing forces with its tangential and radial parts; the pressure angle, preset to 20°, is set in the properties panel.
What is in the report, and which files are there?
The PDF report contains the complete model, the system sketch of the position shown, characteristics, ratings and the derivation including model limitations. Ratings are only made against limits you enter; the smallest transmission angle is checked against 40° by default. In addition there is the drawing as DXF, to scale in millimetres with separate layers, the value table as Excel and CSV, the cam contour and an animation as WebM. Strength verifications are not included.
Is my linkage kept, and how do I share it?
The browser saves the linkage continuously without sending it to us, and offers it for continuing the next time you open the page. “Copy link” puts the whole linkage into an address you can pass on; “Save as project” stores it in your account. A background image does not travel along, only its placement; the recipient chooses the same file and gets it in the same place.
Can Kinematik Studio be used without a mouse?
Yes. Tab reaches the tools, the tree and the handles on the drawing area; Enter on a handle selects it, the arrow keys move it, with Alt in tenth steps. In Quick build and Single part the arrow keys move a keyboard pointer, and Enter places at its position like a click. Delete removes the selection, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo, the space bar starts and stops the run.
